Dublin is enjoying a flowering and increasingly multicultural life, with dedicated performances supporting a colorful year-round arts and culture scene. Dublin performing arts is alive and well and here are some things to watch out for when you visit the city:

Theater

The Dublin Theatre Festival happens in autumn, when local and international productions are performed. The Fringe Festival, when the crazy elements of modern theater predominate, precedes the Dublin Theatre Festival. Even if you are not visiting Dublin at festival time, you will still find a lot of drama on offer.

Cinema

The city has a great selection of mainstream cinemas located in the city center and surrounding areas. The 9-screen UGC complex situated in the Parnell Centre near O’Connell Street is a great multiplex. For something more esoteric, there is the Irish Film Centre in Temple Bar, offering a Hollywood alternative and hosting free outdoor movie showings in the summer.

Comedy

Stand-up comedy is one of the most exciting Dublin arts. While most of the popular names in stand-up comedy in Dublin are now based in the UK, the city still supports a vibrant local scene, particularly at gay-friendly venues. Most of Dublin’s comedy scenes happen in bars and clubs every week.

Dance

Dublin has also developed a contemporary dance scene, incorporating Irish storytelling traditions. Look out for the great performances by the Dance Theatre of Ireland and Irish Modern Dance Theatre and in numerous venues around Dublin.

Music

The Dublin performing arts scene is backed by Dublin being a musical city. It has churned pop stars out on to the international stage, while maintaining a lively and varied scene at home. So many venues in Dublin offer live music of one sort or another it would be impossible to list them all here. Besides traditional Irish music, there are jazz concerts, tribute bands, visiting megastars and everything in between.

Orchestra

Classical music and orchestra are classy Dublin performing arts. The city houses two orchestras, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. These orchestras throw excellent performances at the National Concert Hall.
